Country Fire Authority district five duty officer Henry Barton, based at Warrnambool, said this morning that firefighters were preparing for a day of extreme fire danger in grasslands.

“We’ve had a look at the weather this morning and it’s not much different from what was predicted,” he said.

“We’re looking at fairly strong north and north-westerly winds. We are preparing for that, our incident control centres are all set up and we have concerns about the possibility of fast running grass fires.”

Mr Barton said that hopefully people were very aware it was still a high fire danger period.

“People should be aware they need a permit to light a fire and if they do have a permit we strongly advise they do not light today because of prevailing weather conditions. It looks like it will be at its worst between 1pm and 2pm this afternoon,” he said.

“We’ll set up our teams from 10am this morning. They’ll be in place, we’re prepared and we’ll monitor the weather,” he said.
