A HISTORIC Holden racing car owned by Derrinallum’s Gary Poole will be in the spotlight tomorrow at the Australian formula one Grand Prix in Albert Park.

The black replica of a famous 1948 215 Holden (FX) will be unveiled by Tourism Minister Louise Asher at 11.15am to officially launch an Aussie project to field an entry in next year’s Monte Carlo Historic Rally.

Poole, the project leader, has teamed with V8 Supercar ace Craig Lowndes and Richard Davison to take the car to Europe in January and follow in the path of Richard’s father, the late Lex Davison, Tony Gaze and the late Stan Jones who drove Holden’s first model in the prestigious race in 1953.

It was the first time a Holden had been used in international competition and is still the only Australian entry ever in the gruelling rally.

Poole, an experience race driver, had the car shell in his shed as a spare and inspired the project as a way of honouring a forgotten feat of Australian motorsport.

Lowndes said he was delighted to be asked to be part of the team.

“I think it’s important to recognise such an historic occasion,” he said.

“I’ve never driven a Holden FX so it’s going to be a challenge, especially on snow.”

Transport Minister and member for Polwarth Terry Mulder praised the efforts of tradesmen in Corangamite Shire who worked on the car to bring it to replica-condition.

Motoring company Repco, which prepared the first Holden entry, has also supported the effort along with other Australian firms.

The weekend’s Grand Prix program will also include another south-west flavour with Rob Jamieson, of Darlington, running an Austin Healey in the historic classes.
