Tour de Cure is a cycling foundation dedicated to raising funds to cure cancer, and a team of 24 riders are travelling around the region as part of the inaugural Cancer Awareness for Country Kids tour, the latest addition to the foundations calendar.

The riders left Geelong on Wednesday, stopping at schools along the way to deliver their ‘be fit, be healthy, be happy’ message to pupils.

Riders visited Cobden Primary School on Thursday and St Joseph’s Primary School in Warrnambool yesterday, where they gave pupils a fun presentation encouraging them to find the superhero within themselves and make healthy lifestyle choices.

Samantha Hollier-James, from Tour de Cure, said the Warrnambool stop was made even more special when they realised the pupils were also raising funds to support a school mate who had been recently diagnosed with cancer.

“We had no idea, and when we arrived this morning and were told what they were doing, we all nearly broke down in tears.

“There are stories like that everywhere, and it’s what pushes us to keep going, and keep raising funds.

“When we arrived in Warrnambool for dinner last night (Thursday), we were given a book full of posters that the kids at Cobden had drawn encouraging us to keep going, it made us all burst into tears, and even more determined,” she said.

Ms Hollier-James said that while in Warrnambool the group donated $5000 to Dr Theresa Hayes, so she could continue clinical trials at Warrnambool Base Hospital.

Tour de Cure was established in 2007, and since then has raised more than $6 million to help 61 vital cancer research, support and prevention projects.

The riders yesterday departed Warrnambool for Apollo Bay and will finish the tour in Torquay today.
