The council voted on Wednesday night to exhibit the planning scheme amendment after receiving authorisation to do so from the state government planning minister Matthew Guy.

The council’s director of shire futures Michael McCarthy said the exhibition was the final stage of extensive strategic work undertaken over the past two years. That work included development and adoption of the Hamilton structure plan and CBD parking strategy, the economic development and retail strategies, the Southern Grampians planning scheme review and the airport masterplan.

“This is planning to prepare Hamilton for growth, both residential and industrial,” he said.

Mr McCarthy said there was plenty of scope for the city’s CBD to be redeveloped.

“Forty per cent is underdeveloped. It’s important that we get the planning scheme so that when people want to invest, we’ve got it all right.

“We aim to exhibit shortly. All affected landowners would be notified by letter and the process would be advertised widely. Council aims to give people at least one month to prepare their written submissions.”

Mayor Bob Penny said the council developed a land-use plan and economic development strategy to set the parameters for growth.

“Obviously the Hamilton Structure Plan has been the strategy that has stimulated the most public input and is the result of extensive consultation and background research,” he said.

“This land use strategy will provide clear and strategic direction as to where and how development will occur in Hamilton, providing certainty for developers whilst improving the connectivity and livability for our community.”
