Monday is walking club, Thursday Adult Day Centre, Friday shopping and Sunday church. Not bad for someone who has just turned 103.

Mrs Milbourne reached the milestone yesterday and marked the occasion with family and friends at Hamilton’s Adult Day Centre.

Born into a family of 12 children in 1909, Mrs Milbourne has lived through both world wars, the Great Depression, has seen five monarchs and 23 different prime ministers.

Mrs Milbourne’s grand-daughter Marlene Greiner said her grandmother grew up in Natimuk, where her father owned a farm on the lake.

“Her father sold the farm during the 1920s and the family moved to Brim, in the Wimmera, which is where gran met her husband-to-be, James or Jim.

“They were married in 1931 and had one daughter,” she said.

Mrs Greiner said her grandmother’s family had expanded over the years to include four granddaughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

She said Mrs Milbourne still lived an active life.

“She’s still playing with a full deck of cards,” she joked.

“Gran lives in her own unit in a retirement village and gets meals-on-wheels three days a week. The rest of the time she cooks for herself.

“She still does her own shopping every Friday and is heavily involved with the church.”

Mrs Greiner said a fall last year slowed Mrs Milbourne down a bit, but she was now back to her normal self.

“It took her a little bit of time to recover from the fall, but she’s back out walking with the walking group on Mondays again.

“Gran is deaf and has been since she was young, but aside from that and her fall she is in pretty good health. She just has a few things that come along with old age.”

Mrs Greiner said her grandmother had always remained interested in life and what was going on around her.

“She never shut herself off. She looks on the bright side of life and enjoys a laugh.

“She’s an inspiration, not only to her family, but everyone in Hamilton I think.”

A piper joined in yesterday’s event and Mrs Greiner said another family get-together would be planned soon.

“We just have to find a time when she can fit us in,” she laughed.
