THE trend of Australians taking holidays overseas is on the increase just as the numbers of Aussies holidaying at home is dropping, according to Shipwreck Coast Marketing chief executive Carole Reid.

Ms Reid has welcomed the federal opposition’s new campaign to encourage Australians to holiday at home.

“It is a concern the amount of people travelling overseas are exceeding the numbers of holidaymakers coming in,” she said.

“We know the trend is growing and more and more people are holidaying out of Australia.

“We need to understand the necessity of good quality services and provide what the consumers are looking for.”

Ms Reid said the question needed to be asked why were people choosing to go overseas. “Number one is the good packages being offered, including the airfares,” she said.

“There is also the concept of holidaying at an exotic location and getting on a plane which is another experience.”

Ms Reid said a statewide approach was also needed to encourage Melburnians to regional Victoria.

Last year, Australians spent 132 million nights abroad, pumping billions of dollars into overseas economies.

The opposition has launched the Staycation campaign which aims to encourage Australian to take more domestic holidays.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said he was concerned about the pressures facing local restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions and other tourism operators in his electorate.

“Tourism employs 4.4 per cent of workers in Wannon and it is important that we seek to ease the crisis of outbound tourism by urgently increasing the holiday spend of Australians in the domestic visitor economy,” he said.

“Here in Wannon we have some of Australia’s most spectacular tourist destinations, including the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians, and our rich history, nature, pristine beaches and diverse wildlife are up there with the best in the country.”
