Electrical contractors late last week carried out preliminary work as a prelude to fitting special safety gates on the Melbourne to Warrnambool train line crossing.

VicTrack last month announced $356,000 boomgates would be operating by Christmas, following long-held community concerns.

Six passenger trains and two goods trains pass through the crossing on weekdays and there have been numerous near-misses as trains approach the crossing around blind corners.
