Warrnambool CFA crews were called to the leak between Kelp and Japan streets at 3.30pm.

Fire brigade senior station officer Owen Maslen said a tree root caused the high-pressure gas main to split and release the gas.

He said water was used to disperse the main and Powercor staff would clamp and repair it.

He said the houses were evacuated for safety until the leak was isolated.
