JOHN Butler has conquered some of the world’s largest events in the 11 years since his last visit to the Port Fairy Folk Festival.

A sign that his brand of roots rock has permeated the mainstream came on Saturday afternoon when, despite sharing the stage with some of the world’s most talented acoustic guitarists, Butler’s introduction evoked deafening cheers from the folk festival crowd.

Fans had their first sample of the Port Fairy Artist of the Year’s finger-picking prowess at The Guitar Sit In – Maton Guitar Concert.

He later performed a solo show to packed house on Stage 1, proving that even without the rest of the John Butler Trio his own energy and stage presence could match that of any artist.

Butler told The Standard joining the likes of Jimi Hocking and Jeff Lang at the Folkie was inspiring as a fellow acoustic guitarist.

“It’s educational and it’s inspiring,” he said.

“It gives me a lot of faith in what I’m doing.

“I love getting inspired by fantastic musicians that essentially are part of a very rich tapestry of culture.

“There’s a high calibre of songwriters and musicians at this festival.

“It’s pretty cream of the crop kind of stuff.”
