Sergeant Chris Moloney, of Warrnambool police, said police officers were in a divisional van travelling west west along Princes Highway at 4.49am when a red Holden Commodore sedan was detected travelling east at 131 kmh.

Officers tried to intercept the vehicle and caught up to it near Caramut Road, but the driver refused to stop and accelerated away, reaching a detected speed of 181 kmh.

“Police lost sight of the vehicle and the pursuit was terminated due to excessive speed,” Sergeant Moloney said.

“There are regularly reports of stock and animals such as wallabies on the roads at present and it does not take much for something to go seriously wrong if someone is travelling at that sort of speed,” he said.

Anyone with information about the sedan is requested to contact Warrnambool police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
