Warrnambool CFA operations officer Henry Barton said the owner of the house returned home to find it on fire.

He said the man, aged in his 50s, was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

“We’re investigating the cause at this stage, if it is determined suspicious it will be referred to police,” he said.

“The main part of the house suffered significant structural damage.”

Mr Barton said it took fire crews from Hamilton and Warrnambool about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.

“It’s quite common for a fire in a weatherboard house to spread rapidly when there are furnishings that are highly flammable,” he said.

Mr Barton said thermal imaging would be used to determine the cause.
