Magistrate Michael Coghlan yesterday told Donald John Chatfield, 27, of Saltau Street, that many people had been harmed by his violent acts over the years.

On January 23 Chatfield pleaded guilty to being drunk, behaving in a riotous or disorderly manner and affray.

Mr Coghlan said he watched security camera footage of the incident in which Chatfield picked up a chair during the melee and held it over his head, potentially causing alarm.

He said violence in nightclubs was a problem across Victoria.

Mr Coghlan said Chatfield had a “very significant history” of violent offending and the defendant had received three community-based order for such crimes.

Mr Coghlan said the courts had repeatedly tried to help Chatfield address his alcohol and violence issues but less than a month after finishing his last CBO Chatfield was at The Whalers, there was alcohol involved and things got out of hand.

Mr Coghlan said he had no choice but to impose the previously suspended five-month jail sentence that also related to violent offending.

Chatfield yesterday received a sentence of six months’ jail.

Warrnambool’s Timothy John Treloar, 26, of Janlor Drive, was jailed on October 28 last year for nine months after king-hitting the good Samaritan off-duty detective.

He has three months to be served immediately.

Three other men have been fined for their parts in the melee.

The court heard that early on July 23 last year the five men were at The Whalers Hotel.

About 12.40am a security officer saw Chatfield talking to a friend and indicating towards another man who was on the dance floor with his girlfriend.

Chatfield told the guard that the man on the dance floor had been “running his mouth off and needed to be sorted out”.

Soon after Chatfield approached the man there was an argument .

Another man then approached Chatfield and a verbal exchange occurred before a physical confrontation started.

All the accused became involved in the fight with punches being thrown and security officers trying to break up the fights.

The police officer was knocked unconscious and needed seven screws, a plate and hours of surgery to fix his jaw.
