Andrew King, 22, of Willinga Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded to reappear again yesterday so his mother Bernadine King could give evidence.

Ms King yesterday told magistrate Ian von Einem she would do everything possible to make sure her son abided by bail conditions.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Paul Harris said the real worry was that Mr King would go off the rails again and he told the court someone had nearly died in Portland on the weekend.

“A bloke is nearly dead,” Senior Constable Harris said.

Ms King said her son had been in a good mood during the day before the incidents happened in the early hours of Saturday morning and she believed someone had slipped something into his drink.

“He was very happy and in a family-oriented mood. I believe someone has spiked his drink,” she said before saying the bashing of two men in Portland were “heinous and horrible crimes”.

Mr von Einem said if the charges he had heard about were proven, then Mr King was in serious trouble.

Mr King has been charged with robbery, intentionally causing injury, theft of a motorcar, attempted theft, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, reckless conduct endangering life, two counts of burglary, three counts of theft, and seven charges of causing criminal damage.

Mr King is alleged to be one of four males involved in a series of offences committed between 3am and 5am on Saturday.

A 54-year-old Portland man was flown to Melbourne in a serious condition after he was assaulted, suffering major facial injuries and an arm injury.

Portland police reported the assault was one of several crimes allegedly committed by the four males.

It has been alleged that another man was also assaulted and robbed in a separate incident and taken to Portland hospital for treatment.

Police allege the group was also involved in burglaries at several business premises, in several incidents of criminal damage to private homes and businesses and in the theft of a car .

Three other Portland males, aged 13, 19 and 30, were previously arrested and interviewed by police.

Mr King was yesterday released on bail until April 17.
