Warrnambool City Council staff collected rubbish from a problem area at Lake Pertobe where stormwater drains discharge.

Council Clean Up Day co-ordinator Murray Murfett said the council collected 300 litres of recyclables and 400 litres of rubbish.

“About 25 council staff were seen emu-bobbing as they collected waste from the long grass,” he said.

“Everyone was keen to get involved, so it was a good day for all.”

He said council would also install a litter trap at a Fairy Street drain later this week to stop rubbish being swept down to Lake Pertobe.

The clean-up will continue throughout the week with Schools Clean Up Day on Friday and Saturday’s Detox Your Home Day, before the main event — Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.

Residents are encouraged to register on the day at 10am on Viaduct Road.
