In what was the closest encounter of the day, Port Fairy (right) escaped Warrnambool 41-37.

Both sides entered the showdown a win apiece after their two previous meetings.

But Warrnambool, which finished on top of the ladder and cruised into the grand final, was well rested.

Port Fairy, on the other hand, finished third and had to push through two knockout finals to snare a chance at the pennant.

“We were nervous,” victorious skip Pauline Elliott said.

“We just played good bowls on the day.”

Elliott snapped up the winning shots for Port Fairy, defeating Anita Dureau 30-10.

Fellow Port Fairy skip Vivienne Fry had a tougher outing on the neutral City Memorial Bowls Club turf, stumbling against Warrnambool skip Veronica Anderson 27-11.

“I think we had a bit of luck but we’ve had the determination all season,” Elliott said.

“It was just a wonderful team effort.”
