MERRIVALE captain Michael Walsh is promising a big effort from his bowlers today, despite opponent West Warrnambool being the “odds-on favourite” in the battle for second position.

West Warrnambool resumes at 0-20, chasing Merrivale’s 130 in the final day of the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s penultimate round of regular season matches.

Walsh, who won the toss last week and batted, said his side could finish as high as second or as low as fifth, depending on a “complicated” series of scenarios involving other sides.

“We are the roughies and have nothing to lose,” he said.

“We are going out there with a positive frame of mind. We have nothing to lose, we will have some fun as a group and try and knock them off.”

Walsh said his side had to be optimistic despite the state of the game.

“I think they have one of the better batting line-ups in the competition. We are definitely up against it but we will give it our best shot.

“Regardless of whether we win, our aim is to take 10 wickets.”

Bowling West out would give Merrivale two bonus points and with only one win separating second to fifth and most of those teams facing each other in the final round, bonus points and second innings points would be crucial, he said.

Walsh said his side only had itself to blame for being behind in the crunch game.

“I don’t think that wicket has produced more than 170 runs this season but there was nothing wrong with it last week. It was our fault. We had two run-outs and played some silly shots,” he said.

Effectively one win separates second-placed Merrivale and fourth-placed Allansford, with fifth-placed Woodford and sixth-placed Wesley-CBC a further game behind. Allansford will today chase Woodford’s 9-222 at Koroit’s Jack Keane Oval and Wesley-CBC (230) will be pursuing victory and second innings points when Russells Creek takes to the crease at Jetty Flat.

Like Wesley-CBC, Dennington’s finals hopes hinge on a win and extra points when it resumes at 2-49 chasing Port Fairy’s 195 at home.

Bottom side Brierly Christ Church needs 260 to upset top side Nestles at Reid Oval.
