The 54-year-old man was suffering from major facial injuries and an arm injury.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said a fixed wing aircraft was called in to transfer the patient to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after an assault outside a flat in Portland at 4am.

Sergeant Gavin Slade, of Portland police, said the incident was one of a number of several serious crimes allegedly committed by four males between 3am and 5am.

Sergeant Slade said another man who was also assaulted and robbed in a separate incident had to be taken to Portland hospital for treatment.

He said the group was also allegedly involved in burglaries at several business premises, in several incidents of criminal damage to private homes and businesses and in the theft of a car which was later recovered.

Three Portland males, aged 13, 19 and 30, were arrested and interviewed and police are still looking for the fourth offender.

One of the men was bailed to appear before court at a later date while the other two were released with inquiries still pending.

Officers from the crime scene unit attended the scenes and the criminal investigations unit is now investigating the incidents.

Sergeant Slade urged any witnesses to contact Portland police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
